We are so excited to kick off interviews on Read In Style newsletter, and what better way than to give you the inside scoop on how Read In Style came to be! We wanted to start by re-introducing ourselves and interviewing each other so you all can get to know us a little better. Stay tuned because we will have some awesome guests on here in the future!
Q: How did you guys meet?
S&G: We were introduced to each other at a bar in Flatiron by a mutual friend that went to FIT with us! We clicked instantly over Cosmos and then we connected the dots and figured out we’re from the same hometown. We became fast friends at that point!
Q: What do you do for work/school?
S: I am a Junior Account Executive at a dress company in NYC. I’m on the wholesale side of sales, working with buyers and internally to help bring the dresses you see in stores to the floor!
G: I graduated from FIT a semester early in December 2019, as a fashion business management major and Design Thinking minor. Formerly, I was a merchandiser/licensing coordinator for a lingerie/sleepwear company. I am continuing my education in Fall 2021 at Fordham University School of Law to study Fashion Law.
Q: When did you first discover your love for reading?
S: I’ve been a reader for as long as I can remember! I was addicted to Nancy Drew books and I still have the full collection at my parents’ house! At a young age, I was always in elementary school book clubs with my friends, or reading in my spare time.
G: I actually struggled a lot learning how to read growing up, due to dyslexia. The first series I ever read that really lit a fire under me was Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief in Elementary school. I was a huge fan of The Hunger Games, Divergent, and City of Bones in High School (There’s clearly a theme in genre here hahah). The first romance YA novel that got me to devour books was Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins.
Q: How did Read In Style come to life?
S&G: We began reading again pre-Covid which was constantly talked about with each other. S had a 2020 reading goal to read one book a month, while G had started reading more the summer before while traveling, which turned into bringing books with her on the commute to work. Covid hit and it became a way for us to escape the world & WFH troubles. Eventually, we started talking about how we felt like there was a lack of an all encompassing platform that combined all of our shared interests. Then we decided we should BE that platform. If we felt this void, there definitely had to be other girls out there like us! Read In Style was then born in July 2020!
Q: What advice would you give to your younger self?
S: Don’t sweat the small stuff! You are entirely up to you. Stop waiting on the perfect moment and just do it. I need all of these reminders 24/7 still!
G: Everything you want is on the other side of fear and self-doubt. Stop being so hard on yourself. Stop saying “What if...” and start saying “When…”. And lastly, a direct quote from my dad that has followed me all throughout my young adult life: “Eyes on the prize.”. This stupid little saying has gotten me through some of the hardest points in my life, and has reminded me that everything I want is waiting for me, no matter how tough it is to get there.
Q: What are you most excited about for the future of Read In Style?
S: There are so many things to be excited about! The newsletter is something that has been in the works for a long time, so I am basking in the joy that it has actually come to fruition. I think right now I am most excited about building a close knit community and starting a future book club ;)
G: So many things! My gears turn so fast I am constantly thinking about new ideas to chat about with Steph. But I am mostly so excited to deliver this newsletter on a weekly basis to our readers, which I am beyond grateful for. Writing has always been an outlet for me, so now being able to write about all the things I love, and hopefully make an impact on someone else makes me extremely happy.
